The Building Centre and the National Retrofit Hub (NRH) have today announced a new collaboration for their upcoming ‘Retrofit 25 – What’s Stopping Us?’ exhibition and event series. The programme will run from 26th March to 19th September 2025 and will showcase practical and actionable strategies, emphasising that the time to act is now.

‘Retrofit 25 – What’s Stopping Us?’ is a powerful exploration of the solutions that will help us navigate the barriers and opportunities within the retrofitting of our built environment. As we face the pressing challenges of climate breakdown, social inequity and economic instability, this exhibition will inspire us to rethink what’s stopping us from taking action.

The tools, technologies and approaches needed to retrofit our built environment are within reach, and the focus must now be on mobilising communities, industries and policymakers to make these changes a reality.

The National Retrofit Hub advocates for the reuse, upgrade and adaptation of our existing buildings as a critical strategy in this transformation. Through a number of key themes, this exhibition will highlight how we can overcome the barriers to retrofitting—showcasing practical solutions that can be implemented today. Each theme will address crucial aspects of the built environment, from empowering communities to redefining value, all aimed at creating places that serve the needs of current and future generations.

Sara Edmonds, National Retrofit Co-Director highlighted the urgency of the retrofitting agenda, stating, “This exhibition is a call to action—inviting everyone to recognise that the tools and solutions are already available. It’s time to start asking what’s stopping us and use this understanding to drive action by taking the necessary steps to transform our buildings, our communities and our environment.”

The Building Centre has a reputation for presenting examples of retrofit projects and solutions from across the construction industry. Whether housing upgrade schemes, the decarbonisation of schools or commercial net zero developments we embolden people to collaborate and learn from each through case studies and conversation.

John Bonning, Commercial Director at the Building Centre says, “We are delighted to be working with National Retrofit Hub to build on our previous retrofit programmes and inspire action within local communities and neighbourhoods. We look forward to hearing from partners interested in supporting this agenda to work towards creating successful, healthy and inclusive environments.”
